Frequently Asked Questions

We always get pupils who call us with their driving-related questions, so we thought we would answer some of our most frequently asked questions here! Can’t seem to find the answer to a question you have? You can give us a call, or you can send us an email.

What do I need for my driving lessons?

To start your driving lessons, you must be 17 years old and have a provisional license. You can obtain a provisional license by going to the GOV.UK website and fill out an online application, or you can get a D1 form from your local post office and apply that way. It can take 1-2 weeks for a provisional license to arrive once you have sent off your application.

What should I bring to my first driving lesson?

You should bring your provisional license (photo card). If you have any driving experience already, you should bring any notes or progress reports you have. You should wear shoes with a thin sole, as this helps with the clutch control, which requires some sensitivity. If you wear glasses, please bring these also.

What happens on the first lesson?

If you’re a beginner, on your first lesson, your instructor will take some notes from your provisional license, get to know you as a person, and establish your driving goals. The instructor will drive you to a quiet location whilst giving you a commentary drive. When you get to a suitable location, you’ll swap seats with the instructor and learn all the controls of the vehicle. Then, you will be taught how to move off and drive the car! Once the lesson is over, the instructor will drive you back home and rebook you for your next lesson.

How many lessons will I need?

Everyone is different and needs a different amount of lessons to get passed. On average, it takes our pupils 26 hours to pass, which is a fraction of the 67-hour national average.

If you would like a better indication of how many lessons you will need, our assessment lesson would be perfect for you.

What car will I drive in?

We provide a range of learning vehicles, from Citroen DS3 to Ford Fiesta, and we can find the right car and instructor to suit you.

When can I book my test?

You can book your theory test any time. However, we would say to have a few lessons first, as you can ask your driving instructor about any questions you’re unsure of. Also, driving and theory go hand in hand, so you’ll be revising for your theory throughout your lessons without even knowing it!

Only book your practical driving test once you’re nearly ready and your instructor has told you to. Booking the test when you’re nearly ready means that as you approach your test, the lessons you take will perfect your driving, and you’ll take the test just as soon as you’re ready. Meaning you don’t waste any time!

Can I use my instructor's car for my test?

Yes, as long as the instructor believes that you are ready to take your test, you can use the car you learned in. If you would prefer, you can also use your own vehicle if you have one.
